A smart contract is simply code stored on the Ethereum blockchain that automatically executes when conditions are met—no intermediary, no delay, no negotiation. Think of it as a vending machine: insert money, press a button, the machine dispenses the item. The difference is scale and trust: millions of dollars flow through smart contracts daily, and once deployed, the code can't be altered.

For traders, this matters because most tokens, NFTs, and DeFi protocols you trade run on Ethereum smart contracts. When a contract is exploited (a bug discovered that lets attackers drain funds) or a major DApp goes live (launching a new token or feature), the reaction ripples through ETH and related tokens. In 2023, several high-profile smart contract audits and exploit announcements triggered 5–15% moves in individual token prices within hours. Watch security audit announcements and mainnet upgrades on projects you're tracking—they're often catalysts.

Gas: The Fuel That Drives Ethereum's Price
